The thinking and planning for WERA-1016 actually started in October 2009 when Steve Fransen was invited to give cellulosic biofuel research update and results to the University of Arizona. What emerged from many discussions was the need to develop a western regional biofuel program where research, Extension and industry could collaborate for new grants and projects focused on biofuels. Salt Lake City was chosen as our primary location because it is the most centrally located city in the west, thus everyone will need to travel to meet. SLC has an excellent airport so it is easy for WERA members to get into and return home. There are a wonderful array of hotels near the airport with excellent meeting and accommodations.

Our February 2011 meeting in SLC will serve many purposes. First, key people from the West in research, Extension, and industry will meet and start to find common ground to build an entirely new agricultural based industry. Second, this provides the members an opportunity to develop plans and create objectives for USDA-AFRI grants, Dept. of Energy grants, and Dept. of Transportation (Sun Grant) grants. Third, the West has largely been left out of cellulosic biofuel consideration at the national level. Working together, we are stronger in our approaches and more competitive in our grants than doing the Lone Ranger thing. Production of biofuel crops and in particular cellulosic biofuels, will touch nearly every Ag producer in the West. The WERA-1016 allows us to be proactive and direct some of the future bioenergy outcomes.

The major accomplishment from the February 2011 meeting in SLC will be development of collaboration relationships, development of large and small grant concepts and finding direction with the emerging western biofuel industry. The plan for 2011 is to have a summer meeting at Prosser, WA to see first hand some of the major cellulosic biofuel crops and to continue the collaborative efforts from February.
